   President's Message Fall 2008

Dear Members and Colleagues,

Greetings and well wishes to all as we begin the journey into the school year rested, relaxed and rejuvenated.

The Executive Board of NNJOSA has been working diligently in preparing the move of our workshop location to William Paterson University.  Thanks to Tom Charsky, Diane Falk, Steve Calantropio and the board for their dedication in making this a smooth transition.  September 20, 2008 will open our workshop series at WPU when we welcome Dr. Artie Almeida.

Artie is a dynamic clinician and has been preparing a new dish for you to serve in your classrooms: Recipe for Success.  Come prepared to enjoy a feast of activities and lessons that will nourish you and your students.

October 25, 2008, Alice Pratt will be lifting our spirits and Awakening the Soul: Creating Lessons to Make Connections With and For Our Students.  Alice is column coordinator for OPUS: Orff Programs in Urban Schools in Reverberations and the lessons she will present are for Pre-School through Grade 6.

In November and February, respectively, our members will share engaging lessons from the AOSA National Conference and personal classroom experience.  If you would like to present, please contact our Vice President, Boris Galperin.

Stan Spotswood joins us March 7, 2009 with Jazz, Process and Improvisation.  Stan will inspire us to perform melodies, create movement, and improvise on instruments.

At our final workshop, Schulwerk Springboards, April 4, 2009, BethAnn Hepburn will “spring” us into action with movement, objects, folk songs, improvisation and more.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Joyfully yours,

Natalie Ernstes, President

October 25, 2008—Alice Pratt—Awakening the Soul: Creating Lessons to Make Connections With and For Our Students
It is essential, for the authentic success of our students, that we create lessons that not only address their needs as learners, but that enhance their own innate interests and talents.  This is applicable for all students, but especially true for those who are considered the more challenging to teach.  I share with you lessons that I created for my urban students that were highly successful.  The lessons will span from pre-school to grade 6, and will cover some issues of classroom management and characteristics of successful teachers.  Be prepared for involvement and participation as we “play” the day away!  Please bring your soprano recorders.

November 22, 2008—Conference Sharing Session—Patschwerk of Possibilities, 2008 AOSA National Conference, Charlotte, N.C.
Not able to get to the conference?  Chapter members will bring highlights of the conference to you – sessions from top-notch clinicians.  Come and be inspired.
